Why you need it:

  • Vital Essence 2 is designed to ensure that your vitamin and mineral intake is protected as your pregnancy progresses. It addresses the changing needs of your body during this period, emphasising the importance of maintaining a balanced and quality diet for both your health and the baby's development.
  • While your appetite is expected to return as early pregnancy symptoms subside, the supplement highlights the significance of quality over quantity. Excess weight gain can be challenging to manage later, and the formulation focuses on providing essential nutrients without encouraging overeating.
  • This supplement includes 400ug of Folate, crucial for various cellular activities, not just for minimising the risk of spina bifida.

Why we love it:

  • Vital Essence 2 goes beyond basic nutrient provision by incorporating a range of protective ingredients. The emphasis on quality nutrition and the inclusion of various essential elements demonstrate a holistic approach to supporting maternal and foetal health during the advancing stages of pregnancy.
  • Aligned with Zita West's commitment to the latest research, this supplement reflects ongoing reviews and reformulations to stay at the forefront of clinical and nutritional thinking.
  • The recommended intake of one capsule three times a day (with food) aligns with the changing demands of the body during the progressing stages of pregnancy. This structured approach supports consistent nutrient supply without overwhelming the system.

What's inside (and why):

  • 400ug of Folate (L-Methylfolate): This superior form of Folate supports a range of cellular activities, beyond reducing the risk of spina bifida. The use of L-Methylfolate ensures effectiveness in various cellular processes.
  • Protective Ingredients (Beta Carotene, Copper, Magnesium, Manganese, Zinc): These elements play vital roles in supporting normal cell division and protecting DNA. Their inclusion emphasises the supplement's comprehensive approach to supporting overall health during pregnancy.
  • Additional Key Nutrients (CoQ10, Lycopene, Myo-Inositol, Zinc): CoQ10, Lycopene, Myo-Inositol, and Zinc are incorporated for their specific contributions, including energy production, antioxidant characteristics, cell growth support, and addressing nutrient deficiencies often associated with fertility issues and long-term contraceptive pill use.
  • Balanced Vitamin and Mineral Mix: This mix ensures a comprehensive range of essential vitamins and minerals, each playing a unique role in supporting maternal health, foetal development, and overall pregnancy well-being.

Easy to order and great service when I’ve asked questions about the products.
The vitamins and the packing are great products… I just wish there was one tablet, or fewer tablets to take each day which did the same thing. For example, I’m currently using the firsttrimesterpack, a single folic acid tablet would be great.. three times a day allows opportunity to miss one.

Excellent products. I used them for 2 of my pregnancies and for a few months before conception. I am convinced they helped me conceive. Very prompt delivery too. Thank you.

I first ordered the vital DHA and vital essence for first trimester, and more recently the third trimester and postnatal vitamins. I can't guarantee it was the vitamins, but I have felt so well my entire pregnancy (I'm now 35 weeks), no nausea, and so much energy. What I like most about these vitamins, is that they are aimed at each trimester and not the same for the entire pregnancy, as vitamin requirements do change during pregnancy. In regards to the vitamins themselves, they have no unpleasant taste, as some vitamins I have taken have and are not too large to swallow.
Highly recommended.

Frequently asked

My GP says if I am eating a good diet, I do not need to take vitamins?

Zita West's view is that even if you have a healthy diet – which many people don’t these days, with missed, hurried and convenience meals – you may not be be sure you are getting the vitamins and minerals you need. Not least because intensive food production has stripped many foods of a lot of their nourishment. In Zita West's opinion, a good multi-vitamin and mineral supplement is extremely valuable during pregnancy, if only as an insurance policy.

Is it ok to keep on taking Vital Essence 2 when I am into the 3rd Trimester?

It’s perfectly fine to keep on using Vital Essence 2 for a few weeks after the end of the 2nd trimester, for example to finish off a bottle that you have only just started. The differences in the formulation of Vital Essence 3 are not huge, and have just been made in order to fine-tune the formulation to make it as specific as possible to the particular needs of your body as you move into this final stage of pregnancy.

What is 'RDA' and why are so many of the ingredients in Vital Essence 2 higher than 100%?

“RDA” is an abbreviation of “Recommended Daily Allowance.” The RDA was devised by the Dept of Health in the UK in 1979 to provide guidance on the intake of a limited number of specific vitamins and minerals that an average adult should have daily in order to avoid a deficiency that may lead to disease or general ill-health. Whereas this was, and remains, a useful benchmark for judging the contribution that any supplement may make to reaching those minimum requirements, it wasn’t intended to represent an indication of optimum intake. You will probably have noticed that many supplements, particularly premium priced ones such as our own, contain daily levels that are frequently many times higher than the RDA, sometimes substantially so. This is because the vitamins and minerals concerned have been set at therapeutic levels in an attempt to boost the body’s store of the nutrients concerned, often for a particular and limited period of time, the need for which can of course vary depending on factors such as general health, age etc. It is universally recognised that pregnancy, and preparing for pregnancy, for example, benefit from special attention to nutrition on the part of both partners. All of the formulations within the Zita West range are well within the Government’s guidelines for what represents the upper safe limit (USL) for long term daily supplementation of any given nutrient.

What is the difference between Vital Essence 1 and 2?

The mix of certain vitamins and minerals have been modified to meet the changing demands of mother and baby during the second trimester.

Do the ingredients in Vital Essence 3 contain the RDA?

Yes – they have been approved by the HFMA and are formulated in conjunction with Department of Health guidelines.
