What Happens After Ovulation? 6 Signs Ovulation Is Over

What happens after ovulation? Six signs the fertile window may be closing

Originally written by Dr Amy Beckley, PhD, founder and inventor of Proov. Updated by femme to clarify what can predict ovulation and what can only support retrospective confirmation.

Ovulation is the release of an egg from the ovary. If you are trying to conceive, knowing when the fertile window is approaching is usually more useful than identifying the exact moment it ended, because the highest chance of conception comes from intercourse in the days before ovulation.

First: an LH surge predicts, it does not prove ovulation

An LH surge usually happens before ovulation. Ovulation may occur at any point within roughly the next two days, but timing varies and some people can have an LH surge without subsequently releasing an egg.

That is why an ovulation predictor kit is mainly a tool for identifying approaching fertility rather than retrospective confirmation.

Six signs ovulation may be over

1. A sustained BBT rise

Progesterone after ovulation raises basal body temperature. A sustained higher-temperature pattern can support retrospective confirmation that ovulation probably occurred, although illness, alcohol, sleep and other factors can affect readings.

2. Progesterone or PdG rises

Progesterone is produced by the corpus luteum after ovulation. Blood progesterone or urinary PdG can provide evidence of luteal activity when interpreted at the right time, but an at-home result does not prove the exact moment of ovulation or predict implantation.

3. Cervical mucus changes

Fertile cervical mucus is often clear, slippery and stretchy before ovulation. As progesterone becomes dominant afterwards, mucus often becomes thicker, stickier or drier.

4. The LH surge has passed

After a positive LH test, levels usually fall again. A negative test after a clear surge can suggest the surge has passed, but it does not by itself confirm that an egg was released.

5. Symptoms may change

Some people notice changes in libido, breast tenderness or one-sided pelvic sensations around ovulation. These symptoms are too non-specific to confirm ovulation on their own.

6. A later pregnancy test may be positive

A positive pregnancy test confirms pregnancy, not the exact ovulation date. If your period is late, testing is more reliable than trying to diagnose implantation from symptoms.

What about implantation symptoms?

Implantation happens several days after fertilisation, but there is no reliable set of symptoms that can tell you it has happened. Spotting, breast tenderness or cramps can occur in pregnant and non-pregnant cycles.

A pregnancy test detects hCG after implantation has occurred and is the appropriate way to check for pregnancy.

Using more than one fertility sign

Cervical mucus and LH testing can help identify approaching fertility, while BBT and progesterone-related markers can add retrospective context. Using more than one sign can give a fuller picture than relying on a calendar app alone.

If you prefer automated overnight temperature collection, Tempdrop is one option for BBT-style cycle tracking. It should still be treated as a tracking tool rather than a diagnostic test.

The bottom line

No single home sign identifies the exact moment ovulation ended. Look for a pattern: an LH surge before ovulation, fertile cervical mucus, and then a sustained temperature or progesterone-related shift afterwards.
