Fertile window and chances of getting pregnant around ovulation day

Chances of Getting Pregnant on Ovulation Day

What are your chances of getting pregnant on ovulation day?

Timing matters when you are trying to conceive, but ovulation day is not the only day pregnancy can begin. In fact, the highest chance of conception is generally in the couple of days before ovulation.

The fertile window is bigger than one day

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine defines the fertile window as the six-day interval ending on the day of ovulation. Sperm can remain capable of fertilisation for several days in the reproductive tract, whereas the egg has a much shorter life after ovulation.

That is why having sperm already present before the egg is released can be more useful than waiting for a tracker to declare “ovulation day”.

When are the chances highest?

The two days before ovulation

Research summarised by ASRM found peak fecundability when intercourse occurred within the two days before ovulation, with the highest likelihood commonly seen the day before.

Ovulation day

Pregnancy is still possible on the day of ovulation, but the likelihood starts to decline as the fertile window closes. Exact percentages vary between studies and between individuals, so a fixed internet table can create false precision.

How often should you have sex when trying to conceive?

ASRM advises that reproductive efficiency is highest with intercourse every one to two days during the fertile window. Having sex two to three times a week produces nearly equivalent results for many couples and can be less stressful than trying to hit one exact day.

There is no need to save sperm by deliberately limiting intercourse during the fertile window.

How can you identify approaching ovulation?

  • LH tests: a urinary LH surge suggests ovulation is approaching, but does not prove an egg has been released. Ovulation may occur at any point within roughly the next two days.
  • Cervical mucus: clear, slippery, stretchy mucus often appears as oestrogen rises before ovulation and can be a useful real-time fertility sign.
  • Basal body temperature: a sustained temperature rise is mainly retrospective, helping show that ovulation probably already happened.
  • Calendar apps: useful for spotting patterns, but they cannot precisely predict ovulation in every cycle, including cycles that usually look regular.

A positive ovulation test does not equal confirmed ovulation

Ovulation predictor kits detect the LH surge that normally precedes ovulation. Some people can have more than one surge or a surge without ovulation, particularly with irregular cycles.

Temperature patterns or appropriately timed progesterone-related testing can provide retrospective context. No home fertility test can guarantee that conception or implantation will occur.

The bottom line

If you are trying to conceive, think in terms of a fertile window rather than one perfect ovulation day. Regular intercourse in the days leading up to ovulation usually gives sperm the best chance to be in the right place when an egg is released.
