A few months before ovulation, an egg is transformed in preparation for the next step in its journey. It grows in size, it separates and ejects copies of chromosomes. It’s hard work and the egg needs to be fuelled correctly to help it get this complex process right. Chromosomal abnormalities in an egg are the single most important cause of early miscarriages, failed IVF cycles and the reason it takes older women longer to conceive.
At OVUM they’ve worked with fertility research scientists and doctors for years and there’s one essential factor in fertility that is often overlooked. Our eggs! There is a huge amount they now know they can do to improve egg quality. This growth phase of the egg before ovulation is critical and there’s much you can do to impact its health.
Ovum like to focus on what they can control on our fertility journey and they now know they can positively impact the health of our egg reserves with correct supplementation and that’s why OVUM starts with the egg. Whether you’re planning or trying to conceive, or you’ve been trying for some time, OVUM has everything you need to improve your chances of conceiving and shorten your time to pregnancy.
As we age, our fertility unfortunately can be affected as our egg quality and quantities decline. They know this because the pregnancy rates of younger women are similar to those of older women who have used donor eggs. However, the chromosomal abnormalities found in eggs occur in the couple of months before an egg is ovulated and not over the years as you age. Simply put - scientists now believe that ageing itself does not directly cause chromosomal abnormalities but instead it does create conditions that predispose eggs to mature incorrectly shortly before ovulation.
This means that by changing the conditions before ovulation, you can increase the odds of an egg maturing with the correct number of chromosomes.
OVUM works to regulate your menstrual cycle and promote ovulation and, combined with the antioxidant powerhouse they’ve built into OVUM to fight against oxidative damage, you can rest assured you are doing everything possible to protect the health of your eggs. Other lifestyle changes that could help include maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, taking daily exercise and limiting caffeine and alcohol.
OVUM is especially useful for those with PCOS, confirmed low ovarian reserve (due to high FSH or low AMH), endometriosis or those with irregular cycles. It is also useful for those who have suffered miscarriage or recurrent miscarriages as recent research has shown that one of the main reasons for early miscarriage is related to DNA abnormality. Eggs are rapidly developing cells and so are particularly susceptible to oxidative damage and so OVUM contains high levels of antioxidants in their most bioavailable form to protect eggs from this type of damage.
OVUM should be taken as soon as you start trying to conceive. Ovum would recommend taking it for 3 months prior as it takes approximately 3 months for an egg to develop into a mature one prior to ovulation, although it is never too late to start.
Ovum recommend you take your three daily capsules after food, ideally breakfast or lunch. Feel free to spread the dose over the course of the day or take it all in one go. Please remember that routine is key with OVUM, whilst missing a day or two will not seriously affect results you will not benefit from optimal results if you take OVUM sporadically.
If you have found you are sensitive to supplements in the past then Ovum recommend starting with one capsule per day and building up to the full dosage over the course of 2-3 weeks.
Please don’t. It will not improve or increase your chances of conceiving any sooner. Ovum understand you’d do pretty much anything to fall pregnant but taking more OVUM won’t achieve that. They use optimal high doses that are scientifically proven to improve your egg health and there is no evidence to support higher doses than what we have included in OVUM. For any accidental overdose, please speak with your GP immediately should you suffer any adverse symptoms.
Not all folates are created equal. Research tells Ovum our bodies prefer the natural form of folate, Methylfolate, rather than the synthetic version known as Folic Acid. Our bodies cannot process it as well and it is for that reason that Ovum only include the natural Methylfolate form in OVUM. Recent research shows a substantial amount of synthetic Folic Acid remains unmetabolized and unable to be used, and it is much more effective to use Methylfolate directly.
The main reason Ovum only use Methylfolate is due to a common genetic variation in the U.K. population which means many of us cannot metabolise Folic Acid very well. There are different variants of the MTHFR gene itself and whilst some cause a mild reduction in the ability to process Folic Acid, others are affected by up to 70%.
The gene is harmless but knowing whether you can correctly absorb Folic Acid or not is important to know. Rather than suggesting their customers pay for a private blood test to confirm if they have this gene, they instead use the correct form of folate in OVUM so they can be sure that everyone taking it is able to fully absorb it. This is a far more expensive ingredient than the usual Folic Acid you’ll find in prenatal and fertility supplements, but Ovum question the logic of using an ingredient where they know so many will be mostly unable to absorb it.
You might also notice Ovum use a high dose of Methylfolate, 400% of the U.K’s NRV in fact. This additional intake of folate is linked to latest research which indicates this dosage is associated with a reduced risk of infertility, shorter time to pregnancy, lower risk of pregnancy loss, and better outcomes of fertility treatments.
Yes, please. There’s a lot of rogue science out there, and it pains Ovum to see the number of fertility supplements sold with promises but little or no data to back it up. Ovum stand by OVUM and their formula which has ample scientific evidence behind it. They try to be clear in explaining who would benefit most from these supplements, but it’s also important to discuss your supplement routine with your GP.
The ingredients in OVUM have a long history of use in humans and are not known to interact in any adverse way with other foods or drugs at the recommended dose. OVUM is suitable for those undergoing IVF/ICSI or IUI but please do let your care team know in advance that you’ll be taking OVUM. Anyone with pre-existing medical conditions or on prescription medications should consult with their doctor before starting a new diet or supplement.
OVUM products do not contain any common allergens and reactions are unlikely, however please check the ingredients list carefully if you do have allergies. OVUM is gluten-free, wheat-free, egg-free and soy-free. It is suitable for vegans and contains no artificial flavours or preservatives
Ovum do not recommend taking OVUM when pregnant or breastfeeding. That is simply because there is no scientific evidence to support it, unsurprisingly few are willing to take part in research whilst pregnant or breastfeeding. None of the ingredients carry any specific warnings against use by healthy pregnant or breastfeeding women, but we’d prefer if you switched to prenatal vitamins.
Please keep your OVUM stored in a dry, cool place. Avoid placing any supplements in areas with excess moisture or heat as these elements can cause deterioration of the product and reduce their potency. Not good news.
