Description

INSTI® HIV Self Test is a fast, private at-home test that detects antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 from a small finger-prick blood sample. Using INSTI's rapid flow-through technology, the test delivers an easy-to-read result in approximately 60 seconds, with no sample to post and no laboratory wait. Manufacturer performance data reports over 99% accuracy when the test is used correctly.

Everything needed to perform one test is supplied in the kit, including the test device, sterile lancet, three prepared solutions and adhesive plaster. A built-in control dot confirms whether the test has worked correctly, while a second test dot indicates a reactive result. The test is intended for adults aged 18 years and over and is for single use only.

Important: HIV self-tests have a window period. A negative result may not reliably exclude a recent HIV infection, and UK guidance uses a 90-day window period for rapid/self-tests. If your possible exposure occurred within the last 3 months, repeat testing may be required. Any reactive/positive self-test result must be confirmed with a laboratory test through a healthcare professional or sexual health clinic. If you believe you may have been exposed to HIV within the last 72 hours, do not wait for a self-test result — contact a sexual health clinic or A&E urgently to discuss PEP. INSTI is not suitable for under-18s, people with a bleeding disorder, those taking antiretroviral treatment (ART), or those who have participated in an HIV vaccine study.

How it works

Read the enclosed instructions completely before beginning. Wash and dry your hands, then place the test device on a flat surface.

Use the supplied sterile lancet on the side of your fingertip and form one large drop of blood. Allow the drop to fall into Bottle 1, replace the cap and shake four times.

Shake Bottle 1 four times, pour all of the liquid into the test device and allow it to absorb. Repeat the process with Bottle 2, followed by Bottle 3, waiting for each solution to absorb before adding the next.

Read the result immediately after completing the test. The control dot must appear for the result to be valid. Do not interpret the result more than 1 hour after completing the test.

If two dots appear, including a faint test dot or ring, the result is considered reactive and must be confirmed by a healthcare professional with a laboratory test. If the control dot does not appear, the test is invalid and another test is required.

How soon after possible HIV exposure can I use the test?

INSTI can begin detecting HIV antibodies during the weeks following infection, but a recent infection may still produce a negative result. UK guidance uses a 90-day window period for rapid and self-tests, so if your possible exposure was within the last 3 months, you may need to test again once 90 days have passed.

What should I do if the result is positive?

A reactive self-test is not a confirmed HIV diagnosis. Contact your GP or a sexual health clinic as soon as possible and tell them you have received a reactive HIV self-test result. A laboratory blood test is required to confirm the result.

What does a negative result mean?

A negative result means that the test did not detect HIV antibodies in your sample. However, a negative result does not rule out a recent infection if you are still within the window period. Repeat testing may therefore be necessary after a recent exposure.

What should I do if I may have been exposed within the last 72 hours?

Seek medical advice as soon as possible rather than waiting to self-test. HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) may reduce the risk of infection but needs to be started within 72 hours, and the sooner it is started the better. PEP is available through sexual health services and A&E.

Who should not use the INSTI HIV Self Test?

According to the manufacturer's instructions, the test is not suitable for anyone under 18, people with a bleeding disorder, people taking antiretroviral treatment (ART), or anyone who has participated in an HIV vaccine study. It may also be unsuitable for testing a possible infection acquired within the previous 3 months.

What does an invalid result mean?

The test includes a built-in control dot. If this dot does not appear, the test has not worked correctly and no conclusion can be drawn from the result. Use a new test and repeat the procedure. Seek medical advice if you repeatedly receive invalid results.
