What Does a Tempdrop Temperature Actually Mean? Skin Temperature, BBT & the Overnight Algorithm

One number in the morning is the end of the process, not the beginning

Tempdrop is worn for hours while you sleep, yet the app gives you a single nightly temperature result. That can make it look as though the sensor simply took one reading at the “right” moment. It does not.

Tempdrop collects overnight axillary temperature information and other sensor data, then processes those readings into a nightly sleeping temperature for charting. The result is designed to be interpreted as part of a pattern across the cycle rather than as a stand-alone medical measurement.

Is a Tempdrop reading the same as oral BBT?

No. A traditional basal thermometer usually gives you one oral temperature shortly after waking. Tempdrop measures at the upper arm during sleep and processes a longer overnight recording.

Those methods can both be used to look for the thermal shift associated with ovulation, but the actual numbers should not be treated as interchangeable. If you switch devices or measurement sites, focus on the new pattern rather than expecting one method to reproduce the other's exact temperatures.

For the practical device comparison, read our BBT wearables vs thermometers guide.

Why doesn't Tempdrop show every raw overnight reading?

Tempdrop's current help guide says the raw overnight data are not made available to users because those readings are processed through its algorithm to produce the sleeping-temperature result shown in the app.

That means the useful consumer output is the processed nightly temperature and the pattern it forms with surrounding days. It is not a minute-by-minute overnight temperature trace intended for self-diagnosis.

Tempdrop explains its temperature history and export here.

What is the algorithm trying to solve?

Real sleep is messy

People move, wake, change position and sleep in different room conditions. A fertility wearable needs a consistent way to turn that noisy overnight environment into a usable result.

One odd point should not dominate

The goal is a nightly value that can sit within a broader cycle trend rather than asking you to interpret every transient fluctuation yourself.

The measurement site stays consistent

Tempdrop is designed for the upper arm. Consistent placement matters because temperature differs by body site.

The cycle pattern is the outcome

For ovulation tracking, the important feature is a sustained post-ovulation shift across days, not whether one reading looks “high” or “low” in isolation.

Skin temperature does not mean “less useful”

Wearables do not need to claim that they are measuring core body temperature directly in order to identify a useful physiological pattern. What matters is whether the chosen measurement method produces a repeatable signal that corresponds with cycle changes.

Tempdrop's 2025 peer-reviewed validation study evaluated its axillary method against an LH-based reference across 194 cycles. That study assessed ovulation timing and fertile/non-fertile day classification, not whether the displayed number matched a hospital core-temperature measurement.

Our separate article on why Tempdrop is worn on the upper arm goes deeper into the measurement location.

How should you interpret your nightly result?

  • Look at the trend across several days rather than one isolated temperature.
  • Annotate illness, alcohol or other unusual circumstances when they are relevant to your chart.
  • Do not compare your absolute temperature with somebody else's chart and assume one is “better”.
  • Use the same device and placement consistently.
  • Remember that temperature is mainly useful for retrospective confirmation of an ovulatory shift, not for predicting the exact moment ovulation will happen.

If your main question is why readings look noisy, use our BBT accuracy guide.

Tempdrop Fertility, Cycle & Ovulation Tracker

Tempdrop turns an overnight upper-arm recording into one nightly temperature result for cycle charting. The number is useful because of the pattern it helps build over time.

Tempdrop temperature questions

Can I see every raw temperature recorded overnight?

Tempdrop's current help documentation says raw overnight readings are not available to users. They are processed to produce the nightly sleeping-temperature result.

Should my Tempdrop number match my oral thermometer?

No. They use different body sites and collection methods. Compare patterns within the same method rather than expecting identical absolute values.

Does one high reading prove ovulation?

No. Ovulation tracking relies on a sustained shift across several readings and should be interpreted in the context of the wider chart.

Is Tempdrop measuring core temperature?

Tempdrop is an axillary skin-temperature wearable. Its fertility use is based on the repeatable overnight thermal pattern, not on claiming direct core-temperature measurement.

The bottom line

Your Tempdrop result is a processed nightly temperature designed for cycle charting. Treat it as one point in a trend, not a laboratory result to dissect in isolation. The pattern is the information.
