AMH testing can be particularly useful when considering fertility treatment, IVF, egg freezing or future family planning, where understanding ovarian reserve can add useful context to conversations about timing and treatment. It does not measure egg quality, confirm whether you can or cannot conceive naturally, predict the exact timing of menopause or provide a complete assessment of fertility. Once collected, seal and package your sample according to the supplied instructions and return it using the included tracked return service.

Your sample will be analysed in a UKAS-accredited laboratory and your results will be made available securely online.

What does an AMH test measure?

The test measures Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) in your blood. AMH is produced by small follicles within the ovaries and is commonly used as an indicator of ovarian reserve, broadly reflecting the number of remaining follicles.

Can an AMH test tell me how fertile I am?

Not by itself. AMH provides information about ovarian reserve, but it does not measure egg quality or reliably predict whether you will become pregnant naturally. A normal AMH result does not rule out other fertility factors, and a low AMH result does not mean that natural conception is impossible.

Does AMH measure egg quality?

No. AMH is primarily an indicator of the quantity of remaining ovarian follicles. It does not assess the quality of the eggs they contain. Egg quality is strongly influenced by age and cannot be determined from an AMH result alone.

Why is AMH testing used before IVF?

AMH is commonly used by fertility specialists to help estimate how the ovaries may respond to stimulation medication during IVF. This can help clinicians plan treatment and identify people who may be at risk of producing relatively few eggs or having an excessive response.

Can I take the AMH test at any point in my menstrual cycle?

Yes. AMH levels tend to fluctuate relatively little during the menstrual cycle, so testing can generally be performed on any day of your cycle.

Can hormonal contraception affect my AMH result?

It can. NHS guidance notes that hormonal medication, including some hormonal contraceptives, may affect AMH levels. If you use hormonal contraception or fertility medication, speak to your healthcare professional about the most appropriate time to test.

Can AMH predict when I will reach menopause?

No. AMH generally declines as ovarian reserve reduces with age, but an individual AMH result cannot accurately predict the exact age at which you will reach menopause.
